Source Foods

Tucked away on a corner block, you could quite easily walk past Source Foods and miss it, but it’s deceptively large once you’re in. This neat, hip and sleek cafe unashamedly spruiks organic produce and the space is filled with the aroma of organic, free-trade coffee, roasted in Rockingham by Five Senses and ground on premises. But don’t assume Source Foods is some hippie cafe offering strictly vegetarian fare; you’ll find a mouth-wateringly wide selection of vegetarian, vegan and meals for carnivores on the menu.

The ethos of Source Foods is based on food miles, working on the premise that the further the food travels, the less sustainable it is. As well as supporting organic farmers, the menu features a lot of cottage produce; so instead of savouring goat’s curd from South Australia, you’ll be enjoying some of Gidgegannup’s finest. Chef Lachlan McKenzie knows what he’s doing – he’s also the head chef at the totally organic Sandcastle in South Fremantle. If you don’t have time to sit down for your free-range chicken stir fry, take it away in Source Foods’ recycled and recyclable containers, with accompanying bamboo knives and forks.

With the population becoming more aware of what they put in their mouth – whether for health reasons or environment consciousness – Source Foods now makes it easier to grab a bite with your vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free friends without eating at separate cafes.
